So this morning I get up and start getting myself ready for my morning cardio. And I start to wonder if I am doing my cardio to the best of my ability. Am I doing it at the right time, for the right length of time, the right intensity, etc.... Fortunately I have a walking talking encyclopedia of fitness knowledge sitting right beside me. That my friends, is a blessing when you are wondering if you are doing it right or buying into all the hype out there. So I ask the hubby..."sooooo should I go do my cardio on an empty stomach or after I eat?" Now normally I have been doing it after I have breakfast and was totally fine with that, but last night I was reading some competitors blogs and this one female competitor said she does hers on an empty stomach. So of course I started wondering if I am doing it wrong. I do my cardio in intervals like I'm supposed to. I do it for the time and intensity like I'm supposed to. Now here's maybe where I'm missing the boat....hmmmmmmmm. All the information out there is so confusing sometimes!!! Ugh!
Back to the encyclopedia sitting on the couch starring at me blankly for asking this question. He says "don't you remember the article on this? You need energy to do cardio effectively". I did vaguely remember some article he showed me a long time ago but clearly I am forgetful. So he walks to the bedroom and brings out Muscular Development. Yep there it was...an article entitled "Cardio first thing in the morning burns more fat: Let's put the myth to rest"
In this article it discusses Brad Schoenfeld's review paper in the Strength and Conditioning Journal titled "Does cardio after an overnight fast maximize fat loss". It states that there is NO evidence to support cardio on an empty stomach enhances fat loss. You will have to read the article to get more details on how he came to this finding and the tests with placebo groups. The truth is, interval training is superior in fat loss and on an empty stomach does not make it better.
Oh yeah, I remember now, hehe. So get your breakfast ready and get to the gym with a clear mind and satisfied belly so you have the energy to push out a great interval session.
This makes me a happy girl again since I don't have to feel like I need to starve myself to get results :)
Hugs!
Roni
